- 1960: the Austrian Air Traffic Controllers Association was founded as the VÖFVK (Verband österreichischer Flugverkehrskontrollore), later renamed the VÖFVL (Verband österreichischer Flugverkehrsleiter)
- 1961: the Austrian Association, together with 11 other associations, was a founding member of the EFATCA (European Federation of Air Traffic Controllers Associations).
After non-European states also joined the EFATCA, this body was renamed the IFATCA (International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers Associations).
- 2000: the name of the VÖFVL is now changed to the AATCA (Austrian Air Traffic Controllers Association).
At present the AATCA has some 305 ordinary members.
Any civilian or military air traffic controller can become an ordinary member. (It is also possible to join before completion of training. Military information or passing the FIC test enables members to receive the status of extraordinary member. The status is changed to that of ordinary member upon completion of the training, and from this point on, the Loss of Licence and the legal protection insurance come into effect.)
